What is dry socket?

Q: What is dry socket?

A: Dry socket, or alveolar osteitis, is a painful condition that can occur after a tooth extraction when the blood clot that forms in the socket to protect the underlying bone and nerves is dislodged or dissolves prematurely. This exposes the bone and nerves, allowing bacteria to enter the socket, which can lead to infection and significant discomfort. Symptoms often include severe pain, bad breath, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Dry socket is more common after wisdom tooth extractions and can be managed with professional dental care, such as medicated dressings and pain relief. Consult your dentist if you suspect dry socket for proper diagnosis and treatment.
