Why is a crown better than a filling?

Q: Why is a crown better than a filling?

A: A crown is not inherently better than a filling; the best restoration depends on the tooth’s condition. If there is sufficient healthy tooth structure remaining, a filling is often the preferred choice as it is less invasive, preserves more natural tooth, and is typically more cost-effective. However, if the tooth is significantly damaged, weakened, or at risk of fracturing due to extensive decay, trauma, or large existing fillings, a crown may be necessary. A crown encases the entire tooth, providing greater strength and protection to prevent further damage or fracture. Your dentist will assess the tooth’s condition through an exam and X-rays to recommend the most appropriate restoration for long-term oral health.
